Described on our provincial license plate’s as Canada’s Ocean Playground, the sea defines us in Nova Scotia. No matter where you go, it is never more than 35 kilometres (22 miles) away. We are virtually a peninsula surrounded by seas; the Gulf of St. Lawrence to the north, the Bay of Fundy to the west, and the Atlantic Ocean to the south and east.

The Province of Nova Scotia covers an area of 55,000 sq. km. The mainland part of the Province is connected to New Brunswick and the remainder of Canada by the 28 km. isthmus of Chignecto. The coastline stretches for 7,400 km., but the overall length of the Province is only 575 km., while the average width is 130 km. Nova Scotia is located 59 degress to 67 degrees longitude and 43 degrees to 48 degrees latitude.
